DESCRIPTION
A course designed to introduce students to the rhetorical analysis of biblical materials and related texts.
OBJECTIVES
To provide students with an opportunity to explore biblical or related (e.g., pseudepigraphic, Second Temple, patristic, etc) texts using the tools of rhetorical analysis. Students are encouraged to explore texts on which they are presently working, as well as other texts introduced in class.
 
The goal will be to use rhetorical analysis to understand these texts theologically.
 
Possible research areas:
  • Rhetorical analysis and hermeneutics
  • Rhetorical analysis for NT exegesis
  • Rhetorical analysis for OT exegesis
  • Rhetorical analysis for exegesis of related texts (e.g., Patristic, Pseudepigrapha, Philo, Josephus, rabbinic materials, etc.)
WORKLOAD
  • Readings (geared to class discussion)
  • Research paper
  • Final exam (oral)
EVALUATION / REVIEW
  • Research paper (70%)
  • Final exam - oral (30%)
