Ottawa Awards Teaching Excellence
OTTAWA, May 28, 2004 – Ottawa honoured 16 of its top educators
Thursday evening at the third annual Capital Educators' Awards and EduGala,
held at Algonquin College.
Organized by the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI), this
gala event recognized individuals who have made a significant impact on
the lives of their students by acting as role models, instilling
confidence and nurturing leadership.
"Teachers are a vital part of ensuring the future success of our young
people," said Jeffrey Dale, OCRI's President and CEO. "OCRI applauds the
men and women that serve as role models for our academic community and
whose contributions help to build strong minds and a strong workforce for
our region."
The
Capital Educator's Awards recognize educators currently employed by a
publicly funded elementary or secondary school, college or university
located within the boundaries of the City of Ottawa.
More
than 400 nominations were received from current and former students,
professional colleagues, friends and family. From there, a panel of
judges, representing the community, reviewed the publicly submitted
nominations and selected 16 award recipients from 64 finalists.
"Teachers do more than teach, they also impart a love of learning and
inspire students to discover their uniqueness and reach new heights of
success," said event ambassador Suzanne Pinel. "The Capital Educator's
Awards gives Ottawa the chance to honour these teachers, who are
outstanding examples of the exceptional teaching we see across the
region."

Professor Bloomquist's bio for the Capital Educator Award:
Professor Bloomquist has taught at the university level
for 22 years in Spanish, Catalan, French, and English. An expert in the
interpretation of ancient texts, Professor Bloomquist graduated from the
University of Toronto, from which he holds the Master of Arts (Medieval
Studies), the Master of Religion, and Doctor of Theology (New Testament). In his
teaching he seeks to bring students to their full potential through providing
them with the tools to continue learning after passing through the classroom.
Toward that end, he has been since the late 1980s the impetus behind the use of
electronic tools for teaching and research at Saint Paul University. He is also
the Scholar in Residence at his parish and teaches throughout the Anglican
Diocese. Professor Bloomquist and his wife have four children, from whom, he
admits, he has learned “much of what I do”.
Prof. Bloomquist was
interviewed for the Ottawa Citizen newspaper on the occasion of the
award.
