THO 4114 Gospel Interpretation - Luke

This course is intended to build on knowledge and insight gained in THO 3161 (Gospel Interpretation: Mark). It will allow you to deepen that knowledge and those insights by reflecting further on the historical and cultural world of the NT through another Gospel account. It will also allow you to compare this Gospel account with the one found in Mark, and thus strengthen your understanding of the Synoptic Gospels. Finally, and most importantly, it is intended to allow you to gain insight into Luke's presentation of the Jesus, a presentation that he continues to reflect on his second volume (Acts of the Apostles).

WORKLOAD

  • Class attendance and participation
  • Required reading and homework assignments
  • Term paper (15-20 pages)
  • Final written examination
EVALUATION / REVIEW
  • Home work exercises: 20%
    • For weekly presentation: In addition to having a good working idea of the material in the section that we will be studying (you will gain this by reflecting on the passage and learning how to scan-read the commentary that you are using), I want you to be prepared to do the following:
      • each week choose 1 pericope of interest to you within the material to be studied for that week;
      • ask exegetical and interpretive questions of the pericope (suggested: following the Template for Exegesis and Interpretation);
      • be prepared to share orally with the class your insights from your exegetical and interpretive reflection on this pericope.
    • For written (hand-in) assignments:
      • choose 3 pericopae (preferably, for the sake of learning, one from three different sections of Luke's Gospel (e.g., from Infancy Narrative, Preparation, Galilean Ministry, On the Road, or Jeruasalem account);
      • using the Template for Exegesis and Interpretation provide answers to the kinds of exegetical and interpretive questions that need to be asked of the pericope.
      • You may hand this in any legible form, with or without footnotes. The goal is to evidence that you have been able to learn something exegetically and interpretively from the text.
      • Please strive to keep these written submissions brief (suggested 3-5 pages).
      • Since I will not be determining the due-dates for submission of these assignments, I suggest that you set target due-dates for each of these 3 assignments and that you commit to sticking with the due-date as closely as possible. In any case, all 3 of the assignments must be submitted no later than April 1, 2010.
  • Term paper: 30%
  • Examination (written): 50%
